Crossroad Community Church History

God united two men and a church and blessed their efforts.

In the 1970's DeElda Payton was a very faithful and successful missionary to the Philippines supported by Gray Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis. After a time God had laid on DeElda and his wife Nancy's heart to come back to America and work in beginning new churches here. Then one day DeElda and Glen Lockwood who was pastor of Gray Road at the time began to talk about the possibility of starting a new church in the area.

DeElda and Glen began taking trips to various small cities wondering where they should begin a church. When they came to Shelbyville they decided this might be the place. They looked at several different properties but they couldn't find anything that they thought would really fit.

While they were traveling on the south side of Shelbyville there was a detour to McKay Road. When they came to the intersection of McKay Road and State Road 9, they saw a for sale sign in the yard of a church on the corner. They liked the property and upon there return to Indianapolis they talked to the deacons at Gray Road about the property they had found. The deacons toured the property and decided to buy it then and there. DeElda and Nancy moved to Shelbyville and McKay Road Baptist Church was born, with DeElda as the pastor.

Original Church On McKay Road

With the help of the Gray Road congregation the new McKay Road Baptist Church began a phone campaign and called every number in the Shelbyville phone book, inviting people to attend the new church. On the first Sunday over 100 people came to what the church called "Celebration Sunday" and McKay Road Baptist Church had its beginning. DeElda pastured the church until 1991 when God called him to a church in Ohio.

McKay Road Baptist then called Pastor Glen Rumwell to be its new pastor. After about a year Pastor Rumwell became ill and due to his health could not be at the church on a consistent basis. The church also suffered in it's attendance during the next several years and at one time was down to 22 attendees. The church decided to have what was called a "Vote of crisis" to look for a new pastor.  In March of 1999 Gray Road sent Mike Lockwood who at the time was a deacon at Gray Road to help. At first, Mike helped with music. Later after he had preached some sermons, the congregation asked him to become the new bi-vocational pastor.

Once again the church began a telephone campaign to invite people to come to the church on Easter Sunday. Pastor Mike hoped to make a fresh start by refurbishing the building and relating to a broader range of people. Mike planned to lead the church on a new path headed toward a worship style blending both the contemporary and traditional. But the church is based on God's word, not on special programs Mike said. "God's word is powerful and alive. If I will just stay faithful to teaching His word, His word will do the work."

In March of 2000 the church also decided to change the name to Crossroad Community Church. The congregation chose the new name not to detract from the church's Baptist ties but to reflect a new attitude - one of community outreach.

Also during this time Mike met Pastor Andy Lee who was also a bi-vocational pastor at a church in Fairland, Indiana. In 2003 Mike went to the elders and asked them to consider bringing Pastor Andy into the mix on a part time basis at Crossroad. They agreed and Pastor Mike and Pastor Andy began preaching on a rotating basis. Then in January of 2004 Crossroad called Pastor Andy to be its full time pastor.

The church continued to grow and began to outgrow the small building on McKay Road. In the fall of 2005 the church leadership decided it was time the church needed a bigger building. Fifteen acres of land was found approximately 1 mile south of the church. The church purchased half of the acreage and the other half was graciously donated by the owner.

Easter Sunday 2006 was the last service the church had in the McKay road building. The church was sold and the congregation began meeting in the Gymnasium at Girl's Inc. during the new church's construction.

In August 2008 the 13,000 sq. ft. new Crossroad Community Church was completed and dedicated. The first service in the new building was held on August 31st 2008 with over 150 in attendance.
